The 40th annual Poinsettia Ball hosted by the Ballet Women’s Committee will be held on Dec. 29 at Vestavia Country Club. Thirty-one debutantes wearing white gowns and gloves and carrying bouquets of poinsettias will be escorted by their fathers as they are presented. Following the presentation, the ball will begin with a father-daughter waltz, a tradition since the first Poinsettia Ball in 1968.

A highlight of the evening each year is the Benefactors’ Dinner preceding the ball. The dinner, sponsored by the Poinsettia Men’s Committee, features a preview presentation of the debutantes.

Poinsettia debutantes are honored with parties and teas, especially a traditional mother-daughter tea in December, held this year at the home of board chairman Joy Deupree.

Tammy Towns is chairman of the 2008 Poinsettia Ball. Rita Wood will conduct the presentation rehearsal. Melinda Helveston is president of the Ballet Women’s Committee.

The presentation was conceived by Mrs. John Gustafson and is traditionally held the week after Christmas. Mrs. Gustafson believed a debutante ball would be an ideal accent for the holiday season. The first ball was held on Dec. 27, 1968, with Mrs. Louis Prosch Jr. and Mrs. Gustafson serving as chairmen.

The proceeds from the ball, combined with funds already raised by the Ballet Women’s Committee, benefit the Alabama Ballet.

The Alabama Ballet began in 1981 as an outgrowth of the Birmingham Civic Ballet, UAB Ballet and Ballet Alabama.

Under the artistic co-direction of world-renowned dancers Dame Sonia Arova and Thor Sutowski, the company found status and recognition in the ranks of professional companies.

In 2005, Tracey Alvey joined the artistic team as ballet mistress. Gia Rabito is executive director of the Alabama Ballet, which will perform “The Nutcracker” Dec. 12-21.

Poinsettia Debutantes enjoying the lake

A tropical-themed 'Debs' night in party was held recently at the Riverchase Baneberry Lake home of Roanne and Charles Jones honoring Poinsettia debutantes. Three of the honorees are juniors at the University of Alabama-Brittany Burke, a nursing major; Missy Jones, an elementary education and multiple abilities major; and Lindsay Kennemer, a quantitative finance and mathematics major. Two are juniors at Samford University-Morgan Glasscock, a family studies major, and Katherine Hammers, a graphic design major.

The debutantes were introduced in a more formal event earlier in the day. For the casual evening party, tiki torches lined the sidewalk, and the girls arrived in their college T-shirts. They took paddle-boat rides and relaxed in brightly colored Adirondack chairs, while being entertained by young neighbors Elizabeth and Kathryn King, who choreographed a hula dance for the event.

The buffet included Hawaiian and cheese pizzas from Mellow Mushroom, along with pineapple boats filled with fresh strawberries and pineapple chunks drizzled with orange juice. A walnut and blueberry salad with raspberry vinaigrette dressing and an Italian salad tossed with five-cheese Italian dressing were served. The debs also enjoyed a chocolate fondue fountain with strawberries and pretzels for dipping. Pomegranate and blueberry frozen drinks and green tea were served as the girls dined with tropical tablecloths and lime green place settings.

In the billiards room, a table was covered in craft paper so the girls could design and paint photo frames to match their rooms.

Party hostesses along with Mrs. Jones were mothers René Burke and Nancy Kennemer of Hoover and Linda Glasscock and Susie Hammers of Greystone.

Debs attending included: Kathryn Gargis, Amy Fall, Christen Dumas Lauren Stewart, Sarah Abbott, Gracie Collins, Blair Darnell, Meri-Glenn Freeman, Heather Rice and Ali Wilburn.

The young women will be presented at the Poinsettia Debutante Ball, which is hosted by the Ballet Women's Committee to benefit the State of Alabama Ballet.
