The 43rd Poinsettia Debutante Ball
will be
Tuesday, December 28, 2010
Vestavia Country
Club
The Poinsettia Debutante Ball
was first proposed to the Ballet Women’s Committee in 1968 by Mrs. John W.
Gustafson. Mrs. Gustafson felt another
presentation ball would be especially well received during the beautiful
Christmas holiday season.
Benefiting from the fund-raising success of
the Ballet Guild’s annual Ball of Roses, The Board of Trustees of the
Birmingham Ballet gave its enthusiastic approval. In 1981 the Alabama Ballet was
established as an outgrowth of the Birmingham Civic Ballet, the University of Alabama
at Birmingham Ballet and Ballet Alabama.
Since that time, all proceeds from the Poinsettia Debutante Ball have gone to
support the Alabama Ballet.
The first Poinsettia Debutante Ball was
held on December 27, 1968, with Mrs. Gustafson and Mrs. Louis A. Prosch, Jr.
serving as chairpersons.
In keeping with tradition, each year, the Ball takes
place in a setting of poinsettias and winter greenery as each white-gowned girl
is presented on the arm of her father.
The presentation and a father-daughter waltz are followed by a festive
evening of dancing. We wish to express our sincere appreciation to the
honorees, their families, and the many patrons of the Ball, for their generous
and enthusiastic support in continuance of the lovely social tradition.
Please see links to the left for information on the Board and Committees involved.
